Back Excursions - Island of Capri Back

The wonderfully pure and uncontaminated air laced with the scent of island flowers, the delicate colours, the ancient past, the dramatically beautiful scenery and the sensation of undisturbed tranquillity. This a mere taste of the magic of an island which has become a living legend.

Itineraries on the island
Oebalus itineraries

Rising up like a mythical sea creature out of the blue waters opposite the Partenopean coastline, this most sought after of Mediterranean isles, has inspired writers and poets for centuries. Capri. The heady perfume of her flowers, the exquisite kaleidoscope of colours, the memories of an ancient past, a peaceful silence broken only by the call of the seabirds, these are just a few of the characteristics of a fairytale island
Augustus was the first to discover Capri in the year 29 BC. He was so struck by the beauty of the island that he granted it independence from Naples giving the fertile island of Ischia in exchange. So commenced his private dominion followed by the fervent building of his successor Tiberius, who, in the period between 27 and 37 AD, commissioned the construction of 12 immense villas
In 1906, during building work to enlarge the Hotel Quisisana, the local Doctor, Ignazio Cerio, discovered the remains of prehistoric animals and stone instruments. The name “Capri”, according to a number of historians, comes from the Greek “Kapros”, or wild boar. Others believe it to originate from the Latin “Capreae”, or goats. The island is approximately 12km in length and 3 km wide.
Between the 1600’s and the 1700’s the French arrived on Capri, and built fortifications on the island. They remained until the fall of Napoleon and the subsequent Bourbon restoration of 1815. Only then did Capri awake from a long period of hibernation to embrace with great enthusiasm the Romantic period of the 1800’s.
So began the landings on the island of those attracted by the tranquillity and simple country lifestyle, many were the artists and writers to take up residence here. The Hotel Pagano, the first hotel on the island, was home to the German Augusto Kopisch in 1826. The exodus of Russian intellectuals after the Russian – Japanese war of 1905, contributed to making Capri a political and literary refuge. At that time Massimo Gorki arrived on the island, warmly welcomed by the cosmopolitan community residing there. As for modern literature written on the island, two writers compete for primacy: the Swede Axel Munthe and the islander Edwin Cerio.
