Back Excursions - Positano and the Amalfi Coast Back

A road which winds its way between the rocks, offering travellers the opportunity to see some of the most captivating panoramas in the world. Welcome to the Amalfi Coast. A land where the natural beauty of the landscape, the sun, the shimmering sea, and the purest air meet with the appeal of the popular traditions, the people, and the architecture of the towns.

Towns where one is immediately aware of the mixture of Middle Eastern and Western culture, with Arab influences intermingling with the Christian tradition. The Amalfi coast is strung with a continuum of small towns, some more famous than others, where the maritime customs merge with the farming traditions. Nevertheless, the real 'jewels in the crown' of the legendary Costiera are Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello.
Positano, clinging to the hillside, is a fine example of the vertical city, where Arabic and Mediterranean influences embrace, creating the forms and colours with which Positano is associated. Favourite resort of the international Jet set, which flocks to the town, attracted by the relaxed atmosphere; Positano also boasts a thriving crafts industry which over the years has evolved to become the “Moda di Positano”. The large beach is the focal point of Positano, and enjoys a splendid backdrop of the church, built as if to offer divine protection over the place where the fishermen who inhabited the town used to meet.
Amalfi could almost be considered the capital of the coast. Its history has been influenced, as has its culture, by a mixture of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and local traditions. The cathedral of St Andrew of the IX century is a prime example of the Ottoman influence on the architectural style of Amalfi.
Land of sea farers, so much so as to become a Maritime Republic, Amalfi has such a strong relationship with the sea that its name has been linked to the evolution of the compass. Amalfi is also famous for the production of the Carta di Amalfi an exquisite and much valued quality of paper which has become famous throughout the world.
Last, but not least, Ravello, appearing like a precious jewel embedded in the hills above Positano. A place suspended between the sea and the sky where one breathes a magical air. Its history was linked to that of Amalfi until the separation which marked the birth of this corner of paradise, a paradise which has remained intact throughout the years. The focal point of this tiny town, around which the whole of Ravello's social life centres, is the cathedral, erected around the year 1000. No visit to Ravello is complete, however, without seeing Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, from where one can admire one of the most beautiful vistas in the world. Each year the Wagner Festival is held at Villa Rufolo, to the cliff top terrace of which Wagner loved to retire. Villa Cimbrone boasts a marvellous garden at the end of which are breathtaking views.
